Dental Hygiene visits are an essential part of achieving and maintaining good oral health. The role of the dental hygiene team is to educate and treat patients so they can keep their gums and teeth healthy to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

New patient Dental Hygiene Visit

One of our experienced Dental Hygienists will carry out a thorough assessment of your gums to check for signs of gum disease, explain how gum disease develops and how this relates to you, before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

We follow all the current guidance and research available when recommending treatment and referrals.

Dental Hygiene Visit

Regular visits are essential to keep gums and teeth healthy, we continue to assess the health of your gums, review your homecare routine, remove any calculus (tartar) and stain, so your mouth feels clean.

At least once each year dental hygiene visits combine your oral health assessment. The dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, soft tissues, including oral cancer screening. Radiographs are taken at appropriate intervals to assess bone levels, restorations and check for tooth decay.

As a preventative measure, the Dental Hygienist places fissure sealants and topical varnishes.

Treating Gum Disease

Studies show approximately 50% of the population experience some degree of damage to the bone and surrounding tissues from gum disease, with around 10-15% presenting with more advanced forms, which can result in the loss of teeth.

Patients diagnosed with active gum disease need more intensive treatment. This usually involves multiple sessions to carry out ‘deep cleaning’ to help reduce inflammation, this treatment is often carried out with local anaesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable.

Our Dental Hygiene team work closely with Periodontist, Dr Richard Horwitz patients with more severe gum disease are referred for a specialist assessment and treatment.
